Mom of 3-month-old boy slain in East Palo Alto speaks of family's grief

Ivonne Garcia Lopez had to overcome a complicated pregnancy and possible miscarriage before giving birth to her son in February.

Three months later her thriving infant son was slain on the streets of East Palo Alto by a 17-year-old suspected gang member, according to police.

"He was a fighter, he did everything he could to be with us," a sobbing Garcia Lopez said in a phone interview Tuesday. "He wanted to be with my family. And this little kid (suspect) came and killed him. Everything we struggled for -- this guy comes like it's nothing.

Oh boy!…. am I exhausted. I am still recovering from all of the work put into putting on my baby shower, lol. Now yes I know you are no supposed to plan your own baby shower, but once all of my guest arrived they finally realized why I did it. We had such a great time with food, sweets, games, and prizes, and even though it was a lot of work I look forward to the next party I have to plan.
