It would seem that we in the United States started the bridal shower tradition as we know it today. The urban upper middle classes began the ritual in the 1890s and by the 1930s, rural Americans were also serving up tea and cookies at bridal showers.
The bridal shower is said to have sprouted out of earlier dowry practices when a poor woman’s family might not have the money to provide a dowry for her, or when a dowry was refused because the marriage was not approved by the family. Friends of the woman would gather together and bring gifts that would offset the missing dowry or allow her to marry the man of her choice.

I got an invite in the mail to a bridal shower. But i'm confused, because I never gor an invite to the wedding! Don't you normally send those out before the bridal shower?
Usually, brides send out save-the-dates 6-9 months prior to the wedding (making an invite to the shower unsurprising), but save-the-dates are not mandatory. Wedding invitations are sent out 2 months prior to the wedding. Bridal shower invites are sent out 1 month before the shower.
My mother in law (to be) is throwing US a bridal shower in May. However, my side of the family live in New York City while the party will be held in New Jersey. I hope that most of my side of the family can attend even though the location is hard to get to via public transportation
Well, my soon to be inlaws all live in NY as well (we live in Michigan), I am having 2 parties, so you could look into that (most of his family does not drive either). If you have them all at once though, give her the contact info. On their invites, if you want, you can put to RSVP to you, since most of them will probably feel more comfortable calling
