DEAR AMY: Our daughter is getting married to a fine fellow this summer. We are giving them a beautiful wedding and sit-down dinner reception. We have gladly paid for everything.

From the start, there has been some conflict as to the number of guests to be invited.

The groom and his family have wanted the list to be larger than we are willing to go, but we invited everyone they wanted and even trimmed down our side of the family list to a final count of 200.

Our issue is that when the invitation states, "Mr. and Mrs. John Smith," we would expect only those two to RSVP. The groom's family has taken the liberty of responding on behalf of anyone they want to bring along.
